As long as your room stays above 72F or so, I don't recommend heating the pen up at night, it's best to have a slight cooldown at night anyway. I also don't recommend using the regular blacklights as they can explode...at least I had that happen once. I don't have a whole lot of faith in the black lights from the pet store either.

You mentioned you got a Repti-Glo UVB bulb. I am not familiar with that brand, but you want to make sure that you have a decent ratio of UVB to UVA in the bulb...not all of them have enough for a tortoise...I would not go below 2.0% UVB, but as EJ said, the ActiveUV bulb is the best.

What type of enclosure are you currently using?

The local pet stores have crappy thermostats...I use a Radio Shack indoor/outdoor thermometer..runs about $10 or so...maybe less
