you will notice the nails being worn down more. The important thing is to make sure that they don't get caught on something and pull out; although this is generally harmless and it will grow back, it will be stressful to you! Both my sulkys had au naturel manicure habits, and eventually one of their nails did pull out and there was a bit of blood and all but that is a natural occurrance and they are now fine, nails grown back and everything . . .
It is best just to leave their nails alone. If you hold them up to the light, you can see where the little blood vessel goes into the nail -- and once you see that, you won't want to clip nails anymore! :)
