: Lesson hard learned.....tonight our family is grieving the loss of our 2 yr.old precious, sweet Jamboa. Lesson learned......dogs and torts don't mix. Due to rainy weather, circumstances had all animals in the house this day. What we thought was no problem turned into disaster. These animals, two dogs, two sulcatas, two box turtles, a guinea pig and a bird have all coexisted in the same house without any problems. Today our son came home to very badly mangled sulcata. The vet gave a 10% chance of survival. We chose to have him put down. Right now we are suffering terribly...unbelievable how attached one gets to ones pets. The guilt, saddness, horror and the momentary hatred, are feelings this family does like. We are fortunate that we still have Jamoa's sibling, Buster, left untouched and forever from this day forward protected. This post is for those who think that this won't happen to them. I am here to tell you all DON'T THINK THAT!! As Darrell pointed out in his FAQ, dogs and torts don't mix even if they have gotten along fine.....one day for whatever reason you take a horrifing chance of loosing something very precious. In memory of our sweet Jamboa.
Hi Georgia,
I know how much you loved Jamboa. What beautiful creatures they are.
The same thing happened to me. Our large one, Homer, had a sister named Dutchess. We had a very small dog at the time, a Lhasa Apso, and the dog and the tortoises seemed to get along great under supervision. The dog was like a little mother hen, watching out for them. It was so cute. Then, one day I left them unsupervised for a very short while and came back to find Dutchess dead and mangled and Homer mangled but OK. He still has horrible shell damage visible, including a set of teeth marks. The dog just thought they were cute chew toys. We learned the hard way, too.
