Most of the time you cannot tell until the animal is 6-8"long. Then you will look for a longer thicker tail with the opening more towards the tip on a male, and an indent on the plaston.
The tail is thicker and longer on a male because it contains his penis which has to reach under the female during mating. This is where the indent comes in to help stabilize the male while mounting the femaile.
Hope I don't sound like some kind of tortoise pervert saying "penis" and "mounting" in the same paragraph.....
