Like Jason says down the list, they are delicate but if you do it right they are very rewarding. Where you live you would have to be exceptionally careful. They cannot tolerate cool/damp. If you are seriously interested there is a breeder in Conn. who is very successful with these. Email me off list if you would like to contact him. He sells the babies for $250.00 to $300.00 each and that is going to be the best price you can get. He is also very reputable.

: Thanks for your comments. I live in New York (Long Island), and am
: interested in a smaller tortoise, like the Egyptians.
: Pancakes also look great, but I can't really drop $600+ on a tortoise.
: : live? They aren't hardy at all. Mine died after 2 months. They have a small appetite too. I don't suggest them for beginners at all! Mine died because I had a power failure for 4 days in the winter and he died on pneaumonia. But he wasn't doing well anyways even if the power never went out. Unless you can provide them with almost yeasr round outdoors and live in an arid environemnt, I dont reccomend them at all. I would go with spider tort(s) as they are ghardier and eat better. they also enjoy humidity and are easier kept indoors.
: : my friedn breeds the egyptians(thats were I got my baby one from) and based on my experience with mine and from what he has obsered, they are'nt personable either! They really are shy and if you want something that doesn't stay in its shell for 20 hours a day.
: : Just my opinion. Let me know what you decide!
