I'm currently looking to aquire a pet tortoise, but am solely interested in captive bred.
I've come across a few Eastern Box Turtles in my time, and have always left them be.
There isn't enough of them in the wild as it is now.
The costs involved with captive bred animals can be a deciding factor, however, especially
to someone buying a tortoise on a whim. The imported russians are $50. Hingebacks are cheaper than that.
The cheapest captive bred tortoises available are the Sulcattas,
but in ten years you've got a pet coffee table.
Hopefully enough captive breeding populations will be around to bring
the costs down a bit to aquire captive bred pets.
