Hi.
There are several species that don't hibernate.
Sulcatas, leopards, redfoots, yellowfoots to name a few.
I have kept all the above, with the exception of yellowfoot torts.
I don't belive hingebacks , Egyptians , Stars , pancakes,or Spider torts hibernate either.
Or Aldabra, Galapagos, angulate, chaco, burmese brown, radiated, geometric or Padlopers.
I don't know if elongated or marginated do or not?
I don't consider myself very knowledgeable when it comes to torts. But I'm pretty sure that the above species don't hibernate.Don't quote me on that though!
And somebody please correct me if I'm wrong when it comes to certain species!!!
I currently keep sulcatas which don't hibernate and Russians which do.I've also kept box turtles which do hibernate, and C. galbinifrons which don't!
Gets confusing doesn't it?
Although Russians do hibernate mine don't as it's too hot for them to do so over here in Hawaii. They've never shown any interest in hibernating and are active every day of the year.
I guess that torts that come from areas with cooler/cold winter climates are the ones that hibernate. Most Testudo with the exception of the egyptian? And desert torts which I believe do hibernate.
Those from warmer climates with milder winters mostly don't. They may slow down for a few days during extremely bad weather, but don't truely hibernate.
Hope this hasn't confused you. Maybe somebody with more knowledge than me will chime in and give you a complete list of species that do, or don't hibernate!
Terry.
