: On May 5 I purchased a "Russian" tortoise from a local pet store. The tortoise seems to be very strong and active, no crust, slime bubbles, etc. I have been offering him the reccommended diet ( carrots, squash, beans, broccoli, hibiscus leaves - even crickets) but I have not seen him actually eat anything. He started out at 368 grams and has lost only 7 grams, not enough to worry about. But I don't think he has eaten anything - just walkes over the food and drags it about. He has fresh water, warm and cool areas in his pen, shade, sun. Am I worrying for no reason?
Let the turtle adjust. As long as it is active, don't woory. Mine ate and ate at the beginning of March and now doesn't eat much. All mine does now is try to climb and dig his way out of the house. He runs the house by the way. No cage. Prob. is looking for a mate. Mine drags his food and smears poop all along the kitchen wall. I just clean up after him. Give him or her some dandellion flowers. Don't worry about the weight loss. Prob. ate its fill before you and is loosing some wait with all the dragging of its food.
