I had mine tested, cost about $47 lab fees and
had to be sent out (a fecal sample) for 3 days
to be cultured. My understanding is that they
can have/carry salmo without shedding any evidence
that can be detected, but usually shed it when
under stress - I had mine tested after I got him
figuring the move/new environment would be
as much stress as he'd get. Retested 6 months
later.
I suppose they can pick it up from other reptiles,
which my tortoise certainly comes in second hand
contact with being outside - as we have lizards
and all running around.
We wash our hands all the time after handling,
figuring that Teddy doesn't have salmonella but
treating our hands as if he might.
I'm probably more leary of some fast food place
or something though.
