Horsfield's tortoises (a.k.a. russian toroise) tend to be friendly and don't grow TOO big (10 in. shell), if space is a problem. Just make sure he gets heat, and a fluorescent light that emits UVB!!! I can't stress that enough, since keeping him indoors without one often results in a soft shell (TO BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS).
Mine has been patroling my house for a measly 2 years and I can't say enough good things about him. If you keep him indoors, make sure to let him walk around daily and WATCH him. Those shells can break and that, I imagine, would be the worst thing possible.
