Depends what type of tortoise you're looking for.
Small, big, hibernating, non-hibernating etc......
What type of enclosure you can give it.
If you'll be housing it indoors or out.If outdoors,
What type of climate do you live in?
Wild caught Russians go for anywhere from $30 - $70.
However as they're wild caught they MUST get a vet visit ASAP after purchasing it.
Many are infested with internal worms, which MUST be treated by a vet.
Russians are very nice tortoises. But just because they're relatively cheap, doesn't mean you should skimp on accommodations etc.
They still deserve a large enclosure, vet visit and everything else needed to keep them happy and healthy.
Other small tortoises are available as captive bred and can cost anywhere from around $150 - $ 500.Greek torts, Hermanns...
More of course the rarer the species,or availability of captive bred.
A captive bred Russian for example will cost around $200.
Tell us a bit more about what type of tortoise you're looking for and how the tortoise will be housed. The climate in your area, etc.....
Cheaper isn't always better. A redfoot might be a good choice if you live in a warm, humid climate. A leopard if you live in an arid climate.
Hope this helps.
Terry.
