Russians are unbelievable diggers, and can make tunnels several feet long and deep! I have had some tunnel out before, but thankfully they did not get far; a friend here locally who has hibernated them outdoors, has tried to dig them up in the spring, and could not find them, though they emerged ok on their own later. I would suggest excavating your enclosure, putting wire underneath, then filling in, and raising the final ground level maybe a foot or so above that of the yard...that way he can tunnel if he wants, but won't tunnel out.
