Check the ingredients of the food. Dandelion greens will do this. (change the color of the urates) If it ingests the aspen it will normally pass it. Now I know this is gross but you can see what the little guy is capable of passing. Otherwise it sounds like you have one healthy tortoise. I wouldn't change a thing but I will stress my usual of a temperature range of 75 - 100 and water available at all times. About the cuttlebone, the fact that it is munching it that much is good. What it does not use it will pass. This has several benefits, it keeps the beak trim, the nails trim and provides calcium which these particular tortoises seem to need a great deal of.

: hi all,
: i've noticed that since i switched sophie's food to pellets (kaytee and vitakraft) with green leafy stuff once a week, that her urate discharge has become dark orange, but NOT gritty. i've also recently used aspen bedding as well as newspaper which she takes to quite well. i was wondering what the consequences are if she ate some aspen? i've also noticed her taking huge chunks off the cuttlebone, and that she smells different, kinda like elephant poo. when soaking her today, i'd noticed that she was slightly constipated at the begining and did a huge amount of poo, the most i've ever seen! she also drank quite a lot today, more than her usual. does her orange urates mean anything? should i change anything?
: thanx
