: I'll toss this out and see if anyone else has experienced this problem, assuming it is a problem at all. I keep several tortoises in a row of open pens next to my backyard deck. All are small: three Russians, a yearling sulcata, and a hingeback. Today I observed a short-tailed shrew (Blarina brevicauda) sniffing around the sulcata's pen. Shrews are mostly insect eaters, but they have been known to attack larger animals, including snakes, rodents, and other shrews, and they secrete a mild venom. I don't leave my tortoises out after dark, and I really don't want to have to evacuate the pens or tear out my deck. Do I have a serious problem? Has anyone else dealt with this?
Hi Tracey,
I wouldnt chance it. Can they get though one inch chicken wire? If not, this is what I would build an enclosure out of :)
There are Ultrasonic Repellers to discourage these kind of visitors. According to everything Ive read, tortoises only hear vibrations. Wonder if this would be safe?
night,
tcc :)
