Dead turtles on the highways

I drove from Birmingham to the Gulf Coast this weekend & counted at least 8 dead turtles on the side of the road. Most were box turtles, one was a snapper, & one may have been a gopher tortoise. I did see one live box turtle & was able to stop & put him on the other side of the highway in the direction he was traveling.

These guys just don't have a chance in this day & age with hundreds of cars & trucks traveling at 80 mph. When I was a kid, my grandfather always brought me a box turtle he found in the road. I'd keep it until I went to visit them in the country then set it free. At this rate there wont be very many left in the wild in 10 to 20 years. How sad.
