In Reply to: What kind of land turtle-tortoise to get??? posted by Ann P on April 27, 2001 at 16:59:19:
Hi Ann--
Tortoises that grow to a reasonable size include Hermann's, Greeks, and Russians. I have a Hermann's--they have a pleasant personality and are fairly hardy. They can be kept indoors provided they have the proper UV lighting and a good deal of space. Of course, any time outside in the sun is very beneficial! You could also consider a species of box turtle. These are just some thoughts to look into.
Just a word of caution--if you look at some of the recent posts, you will see that whatever you get, you don't want to let it mix with your painted turtle. Different turtle and tortoise species should be kept in separate quarters.
Good luck! :-)

: I am sure this gets asked all the time, but I want to be informed before I make a mistake and get something I can't care for. I would like to get a small land turtle (something the size of a box turtle) or something similar. I already have a midland painted turtle and it has reminded me of how much I enjoy turtles. If I get another turtle, it would probably have to be kept inside since I really don't have a suitable outside enclosure. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!!!
