I'm in the process of revamping my outdoor enclosure for my juvenile hermanni (making it secure). Meanwhile I've been taking her outside, attended. She seems very determined to eat small pebbles. I have been watching her like a hawk to make certain that she doesn't, but tortoises can be so stubborn! There is a good deal of tiny pebbles where her pen is. First, I would like to know if I should be concerned about this behavior (in other words, couldn't it lead to an impaction if she manages to swallow pebbles?). Second, if I need to prevent this, would adding a layer of sterile topsoil be a satisfactory method. I cannot pick out all the miniscule pebbles as the area receives quite a bit of stone detritus.
Thanks!
Jennifer
