I agree, the Russians are very cold tolerant. If you look at the latitude of the earth, they are found further north of the equator than any other tortoises of the Northern Hemisphere.

They live in an extreme environment in Central Asia. The Discovery Channel aired a documentary on the Red Desert in Central Asia. The summers are very hot (torts estivate) while the winters are very cold (torts hibernate). As a result, they may only be active 4-5 months out of the year.

Russians are very hardy tortoises. I own 7 and they thrive (living outdoors when not hibernating) in S California and other parts of the Southwestern USA. Vidi-Herp.com also offers a great video and booklet on Russians . Minh

two Kinixys homeana at a herp show. I picked the two that were sticking their heads out and see: There are quite a few species of hingebacks. Unfortunately a lot are imported so they are not easy in that regard. Expect at least one trip to the vet. I bought my med interested in their surroundings. All the torts were lightweight, which is not a good sign. My two - Pokey and Trucker - have settled right in and are eating and pooping and doing all the good things. I still haven't been able to get de-wormer in them - I think I'm going to have to inject it into the worms. Blech. But they do need it.

: In all the turtles I have known, a captive bred version is always friendlier than a wild caught. I have a Leopard Tortoise, the two hingebacks, an Indonesian Box Turtle (highly aquatic but friendly), a mud turtle and a Gulf Coast Box Turtle.

: The best cold tolerant tortoise is, I believe, the Russian, which is also a very active and nice-sized tortoise.
: : I don't have one and don't one one. Not enough space to have everything I want. I was just curious to know if they are good pets? Are thety friendly torts? Cold tolerant? Thanks and happy heping everyone.
