Hi Billy,
Another thing to think about is if you want an animal that hibernates or no. I persoanlly dont keep any animals that hibernate that are not already native to this area.
Your in Texas, right? Depending on the humidity in your area, Red Footed Tortoises are great animals. They get as big as 20 lbs and are kept much like box turtles but eat less meat and thrive in a huge planted pen. You could mist it daily to keep the humidity higher if needed.
have you considered a leopard Tortoise? They are an arid species that gets about 60 depending on the sub species. They dont hibernate and love to graze on untreated grasses and etc. Really neat animals (I have 5!)
