I think the best way to go about picking a suitable tortoise is climate, size and what kind of space you can provide. it sounds like you have already evaluated these things. Well done! The Testudo family includes Hermann's, and Russians and both are supposed to be hearty animals. If selecting a Russian, be sure to get captive bred one or consider adoption. They are so sick and stress by the time their imported into this county and are often sickly. Best to not contribute to depleting the wild ones anyway with so many needy and misunderstood ones available.
Also, box turtles thrive here is you have a predater safe enclosure (fellow Texan here :)
