In Reply to: Calcium and other Supplements help need! posted by Angel on April 20, 2001 at 12:21:00:
: Hi,
: I have a few questions about calcium. I have read many different things. Should I give it daily with each meal( I will be getting a tortoise hatchling in a few weeks) or every other day? How often shold I give it Multi- viatmins and D3? Some of said give it calcium with D3 in it but I don't want to give it too much and overdose it. Also i have heard you can crush a Centrum tablet and sprinle it over the food daily, is this true?
: Your help would be great...I have the rest of the setup ready to go for him and just need to figure this supplement thing out. Thanks in advance.
Hi There is an alternative to having to give D3 but some find the better UV lighting controversial as well. The uv heat lamp at: www.uvheat.com would eliminate the need for D3 all together if your tort isn't getting access to natural unfiltered sunlight. I have lots of save links and info on the pros can cons of this lighting if your interested- just say so ok?
A phosphorus free D3 calcium supplement used as a light sprinkling daily has not cause any documented probs that im aware of. But again, its only needed for animals that don't get real sunlight.
When choosing a supplement, generally 1-3 times a week considering the variety and how close to a natural diet that your giving should be fine.
Take care,
tcc :)
