Christine,
Red-eared slider females can grow up to 12 inches. I've personally handled two that were 10 inches. One was given to us that was 4-5 years old and 8 inches and laying eggs - it had a good set-up while growing. Another person has one that is 4.5 inches and two years old, without benefit of UVB (but anotherwise good set-up).
Not a good turtle for a beginner. Females do best in ponds.

: : I saw a baby tortoise at a pet store the other day. There was no name on the tank. I was wondering if you could tell me what it was. Its skin had a neon greenish color to it. It was so cute. And how big does it get?

: Sounds like a baby red-eared slider. They can get to up to about 7 inches long...but it takes years for them to grow, especially if you have one confined to a small tank.
