: : Christina,
: : Some folks take this to an extreme. Don't kill yourself or worry yourself over the deal. You gotta figure if it is safe for human consumption it can't be all that bad for tortoises. I've been feeding this kind of stuff to herps for over 25 years in one form or another. Use your better judgement. Some of these things that are on some peoples 'never feed' list are just fine to feed within limits. (I don't know how carrot made that list. I feed it at every feeding) Green beens is another item that is just fine in moderation. Just remember you want variety. And yes, spinach is a no no with certain species but not all.

: Hi Ed,
: You wernt refering to my food list were you? I dont have that carrots on the never list, right? Have to check that one..
: So many of the ppl that I meet dont offer a balanced diet b/c they cant keep even ten different veggies fresh for a week when feeding babies. Bearing this in mind and the variety that most tortoises utilize in the wild, some foods become even more unsuitable (even for a human vegetarian, its unhealthy to eat such a limited about of foods).
: Green beans for example, are very high in protein, Oxalic Acids, Phytic Acid and Goitrogens.
: In my humble opinion, this isn't even good for a box turtle. BTW I am a rehabber and have kept box turtles my entire life. Too many of the animals that come here have long-term nutritional deficiencies and deformities :( To exclude a few things may seem "radical" to you, but this is why I always include the following links when giving feeding info.
: I don't profess to be an expert but do enjoy sharing as much information to give ppl the opportunity to find what works for them, in their particular situation.
: Thanks for not just calling my post BS. Hope you are all having a really good Sunday. Its 95 in the shade here in Texas.
