Geochelone sulcata is the scientific name.

African spurred tortoise is the common name.

Daniel is right, these tortoises don't hibernate.
They are readily available, but need specific care.

This is a tortoise that will grow HUGE, males can reach 200lbs. Not suitable for housing indoors as sub adults/adults.
I wouldn't recommend getting a sulcata unless you live in a warm climate and have a large yard.

Sulcatas are grazing herbivores, they need daily access to a grazing area.

For more info on sulcatas visit the web sites and link below.

A note:
Due to their huge size as adults many sulcatas become unwanted pets. Some are dumped, others turned over to tortoise adoption organizations, societies etc.If you live in a warm climate, it may be possible to adopt a sulcata.

Many are available for adoption. This year sulcatas more than any other species have been given up to Turtle Homes, for rehoming.

So please think twice before getting a sulcata. Especially if you live in a cold climate.

Here are the web sites and link:

Hope this helps,
Terry.
