"Does that mean that those who only keep one, or who have decided not to breed ( too many sulcatas available already, why add to the huge number )are somehow beneath you.
That the care of their tortoise matters less, or that they deserve little in the way of respect."
Yes I think it does. Tortoises are one of the most endangered types of animal in the world. If people keep buying single animals with no hopes to breed, the pool of genetics will keep getting smaller for those of us who want to breed. As far as sulcatas being readily availlable your right. But when I was growing up parrot beaks were all over the place. True they were not cb, but other species have been and then slowly disappeared. Do you think people will still breed them when their price dropd to about ten bucks each, it will happen. Plus sulcatas are having a lot of pressure put on them in the wild. The disappearance of this species could come in a few decades. The reason I said people should buy books, is because I worked in a pet store specializing in herps for two years. When I would set a person up with a new animal, I would always include a book. Nine out of ten would flip through it, then return it to the shelf. I usually was not suprised when they called back and their pet was sick or dead. Yes the Internet is great, I am using it write now, but some info I have seen on webpages is ludicrous. Any dummy can have his or her own web page. A dummy with a book is either experienced or famous. Are all books great, no but at least people can learn their animals correct name and a general idea of where it lives. As far as the planter goes, yes it was one incident, but it could have killed a defenseless tortoise. We have no right to think we own these animals, but we do, so we could at least not be ignorant about thier care and we can value their lives. They have been here much longer than we have. As far as our disagreement, I agree it is best left as dead.
