Hi Terry, yes, she is underweight, the second pic is only a couple of weeks old. At the time that pic was taken she had gained about 10 pounds already. All food has been native, she is a weed-mower and loves native grasses...and a few weeds. Her SCL is about 19"...she has had dietary probs in the past, he carapace tells the whole story. When she was tiny I don't think she got a very good start. :-(
She must have been starved some time before she got here. :-( I don't know how long she was out there, but I'd have thought she would be a lot dirtier than she was. Looked like what we call a "city tort" out here...native and outdoor tortoises here don't stay clean for long, they usually have caked sand stuck all over them from winter rains, or they are really dusty. No one could have picked a more cruel time of year to do this to the poor thing.
The gular scutes are weird, aren't they?! You are not hallucinating....I thought the same thing..they do look like someone filed them down or she was stuck somewhere with abrasive walls or something and she literally wore them off.
At least in the summer months she could have dug a good scrape and escaped the heat..but there isn't much escape from freezing temps.

: Annie,
: is sniffles still under weight, or does he/she just look that way from the photo?
: Or maybe my sulcatas are over weight.
: Also what's up with the gular scutes, or is it just the photo again? It doesn't look like he/she has any. Or am I halucinating!
: Anyway glad sniffles was found and has a good home now.
: It's been a long day!
: Terry
