Palpating female sulactas for eggs

I got pretty good at palpating my female California desert tortoise for eggs. I have tried doing this with my 80 pound female sulcata, without any luck. Is it me (i.e. I don't know what I am feeling), or is it tough to do even for pro's. This would be the 1st time she is laying, and I'd like to find out if she has eggs (short of getting her x-rayed). Any suggestions? Thanks.
