: I AM NURSING BACK TO HEALTH A FLORIDA GOPHER TORTOISE I FOUND IN BAD SHAPE ALONG THE ROAD IN SEPTEMBER...HE SEEMS TO BE DOING WELL-ABOUT THE SIZE OF A GOLF BALL NOW.
Hey man,
Good job saving the creature. You should probably call one of the ecological parks depending on what part of Florida you are in, so the tortoise can get checked for URTD (which it probably has) and then surrender it to them.
Florida will probably have killed everyone of these tortoises in the next 25 years or so with all the irresponsible development and highway retaining wall structures, modern day Cheloniocide.
Yup, we are doing the same thing in this state that prehistoric man did to the giant native tortoise and the largest member of the box turtle family.
Added to it is the fact that they are dying from this upper respiratory tract disease that nobody has a good grasp on how to stop.
When you look at that cute little tort that you saved from dying, think of this my friend..you have the control to contact the right people that may be the key piece to the puzzle that will take that hatchling, raise it with its own kind, and just maybe that group will be released back into the wild in 40 , 50 years from now and keep this genus thriving.
Do the responsible thing and THEN buy a box turtle.
Ciao'
Giovanni(who has saved plenty of testudines on Florida roads)
