Go to the link below for additional pictures. Those of you who would love to have one of these beautiful tortoises please be patient! Every year the price will come down a bit. People have asked why the high price, and why are they so expensive. Actually $17,000 is probably much less than what they are actually worth. There is a tremendous income potential to the first person who breeds albino to albino (100% of the offspring will be albinos). Imagine that an African spurred tortoise can produce between 60 and 120 eggs a year. Now multiply that by even $500 to a $1,000. The first year of breeding could easily gross $100,000. That’s not a bad investment!
My pair of normal colored tortoises (which are both heterozygous for albinism) have laid more eggs this year. I expect that a few more albinos will be produced and the price will be a little less. The price will come down a bit more in 2002 but of course the income potential will also decreases to later breeders. Within not too many years the average turtle keeper will be able to afford one of these beautiful tortoises.
Come and see the “Ivory Tortoise” this summer at the Daytona Beach Expo!
