Choosing the right Tortoise for me...

Hello, I do not know much about turtles or tortoises, but I am interested in herpetology, and am considering adding a breed of tortoise to my collection of herps... :) I am looking for any advice on which types of toroise to consider and begin researching. Maybe some species that will not require more than a 12ft x 12ft outdoor enclosure. Also, I live in San Diego, California, so maybe there is a species out there that can be kept in my backyard with minimal heating or cooling requirements, considering the weather here is pretty warm overall.
