A little more info

This turtle is not native to were it was found, so it was probably someones pet. It was found in the back country of San Diego, CA. For anyone familiar with San Diego, it was found crossing the road in Jamul. The lady who found it has some property off of Honey Springs Rd. and said the turtle was not near any houses when found. I haven't seen river cooters or wood turtles for sale here. I looked at a pic of a river cooter and the turtle I have doesn't have any stripes on its head. Its head is just a drab brown color.
