After looking through some pictures... I'm guessing maybe a North American wood turtle (that is, assuming you live in North America) If that's what it is, it's a protected species.

: I had a friend find this turtle/tortoise. I think it might be some sort of asian box turtle, but I am not sure. It is about 10 inches long. A brown color, fairly flat shell. The back edge of the shell is slightly serrated, with a v notch in the center of the back. The plastron is yellowish with brown blotches. It does not have a hinged plastron. I am trying to attach a picture, hopefully this works. Everytime I try to take a pic it retreats back into its shell.
