: hi
: I am new to this group and have lots of questions. I am thinking
: about getting 5 star tortoises!!!!! What are the different species? I
: think that I can get Indian Stars, Sri Lanka Stars, or Burmese Stars. Are
: these the only spices? What are the differences? Are the prices the same?
: Do stars still get imported? How much money do the different spices cost?
: Are some species easier to breed or keep? What are the basic care
: requirements for stars? How long does it take for a baby star to be
: breeding age? I live in LA, California and am going to built them an
: outdoor cage and try to breed them! I am new to Star tortoises and would
: like to get all the info I can before I get any! Any info is a big help.
: Thanks, Eric
The India and Sri Lanka stars are the same animal Geochelone elegans. They are available as captive bred and wild caught. The burmese star G. platynota, the last I heard is Apendix 1 on the CITES list (endangered) good luck getting one. Stars are one of the more difficult tortoises to keep. I suggest you buy a good book on them before you attempt to keep these tortoises. These tortoises are also rather pricey. These are not a good first tortoise. Just my opinion.
