You started with a very understated statement. (this is very wierd)
The tortoises shell is actually its ribs. So, if you remove the shell you are basicly left with a hand full of guts. The lung is actually an integral part of the upper shell.

: This may seem weird but does anyone have any pictures of any tortoises without shells? just interested to see what it would look like, and to settle a bet in my office!
