Eric:

I do not think that there are any legally imported star tortoises, though I think there are a number that enter the U.S illegally. I have heard that there may be some legally imported from Pakistan but India does not allow export.

They are a great tortoise, friendly, outgoing, and attractive. They do not burrow, grow too large, and multiply males and females may be kept together without problems (fighting).

I have bred these tortoises the past several years, and currently have eggs that should hatch any time. There are a few people breeding these tortoises so check the tortoise classifieds. They generally start at about $500.

Diet includes standard tortoise food. Mine eat burmuda grass, opuntia cactus, carrots, etc. Mine experience a much wider temperature range than most people recommend. They are provided heat when low temperature are in the 40s or high temperatures do not reach the upper 60s. They also experience high temps of 120 degrees. I keep them outside year round. Indoors they should probably be kept at about 75 to 90 degrees.

My star tortoise lay eggs from November to March. They have laid from one to six eggs and from one to three clutches annually.

Good luck,

Jerry
