A few wild tortoises may show a slight raise to the scutes...which IS genetic..or is caused by eating items too high in protein in the wild (A Desert tortoise living here near an alfalfa field is a perfect example)...but for the most part...they should have a smooth, non "bumpy" carapace. I have numerous photos of WC sulcata..and occasionally one will have a VERY slight raise to each scute...but it doesn't look the same as pyramiding does. For some examples of pyramiding...this link will show you just how bad it can get. Very sad :-(

: I just read a web site page that Theresa had sent me and it mentions that along with poor diet, it can be genetic also which wouldn't obviosly be related to diet.... Any comments???
