: What substrate do you guys use?
Well, one of the keys to success of keeping Russkies is keeping them DRY. Keep the moisture down...so no soggy substrates or ones which hold moisture. Aspen shavings....mulch (leaves, organic soil without poilymers (white beads) or similar and which isn't dusty is usually the best.
: I have been hearing a lot about a mixture of soil (no fertilizers of course) and vermiculite
Vermiculite is often used because it retains moisture well and is great for species that need more humidity than Russkies do. I've never used it for a Russian tort.
: also what humidity do you keep your russians at in a colder climate?
Here...the humidity is low so we don't even measure it. The humidity in the air doesn't seem to be too much a factor as long as substrate and burrowing areas are dry.
: Oops I guess that is two questions well I just feel like I have so much to learn but thanks again for all of the great information when I do get a tortoise I want to make sure it stays healthy...
Better you are asking BEFORE getting your tortoise instead of AFTER. That's nice to see, I bet you'll be a great tortoise keeper!
