Nose bubbles

My tortoise has occasional bubbles come out of his nose. I have read that this is a sign for respiratory infection. Can someone give me more info on this.
Also, I have read differing opinions on temp. sexing Star tortoises. Can someone clear this up for me. Some people say that you can temp. sex Stars and some have the contrary opinion.
