I house my pair of russians in a Rubbermaid CLOSET. When laid out on its back it provides
13 sq ft of floor space. This year I'm going to
build them an outdoor enclosure with at least
50 sq ft of space. Then in the autumn I'll
put them in an indoor enclosure that will have
about 20 sq ft. You can put them in something smaller but they spend a lot of time trying
to crawl out.
Diet: variety. Don't rely on one type of
vegetation or one canned food. Use collard greens, turnip greens, endive, escarole, dandelions (flowers and leaves - really good),
plantain (common yard weed - also good), clover, grass, a little romaine lettuce - only a little, squash, parsnips, carrots. My tortoises don't
really like any of the dry pelleted foods like
RepCal or Pretty Pets. Just pick up a bunch
of one of the green leafy items a week, and rotate through the list. The vegetables like
diced squash, carrots, parsnips should be fed like
toppings for the green salads, not as the main course. In the summer, use the weeds, clover and
grass as much as you can - they are the best foods. Collect them from areas free from chemical treatments.
And add some calcium/d3 powder once or twice a week. RepCal or Minerall are good.
