: : : : Jennifer, Do you know how to contact the people who own the beasley site. I tried to Email them through the site but it came back. I agree with most of what they say on their site, but I have some questions. They recommend not feeding Collards because of Oxalic acid. It's my understanding that Collards have no oxalic acid.

: : : Tim, if I remember correctly, oxalates are a by-product of plant metabolism so most or all plants have some oxalate level. Collards actually have a fairly high level of oxalates compared to some other commonly fed greens. However, they also have a high amount of calcium and an excellent Ca:Ph ratio. Looking at only the oxalate level, out of context, is misleading. Try this link for the information you need:

: : : http://www.sonic.net/melissk/cal_ox.html

: : Turtle cafe has a chart that says collards are low in oxalic acid. Who you going to believe. I think I'll keep feeding the balanced diet my Vet. recommends. My redfoots have been on it for eight years and their fat and healthy.

: : Check out this chart.

: Tim, if you check the references that the Turtle Cafe used to formulate their chart you will see that they referenced the same Melissa Kaplan site that I referred you to! The info from Melissa's site is from the U.S Dept. of Agriculture.

T.B., I noticed that I also noticed that the Beasley site references some of the same people but gives conflicting advice. I think if you feed a wide variety of veggys and fruit and stay away from the ones that are highest in oxalic acid and supplement, your tortoise will do well. It seems to me people are making a mountain out of a mole hill with this oxalic acid stuff.
