Hi Lori--
You are already doing what I would suggest-- that is, research *before* you buy. (Of course, you should continue to research after, as well). Understand all the aspects involved in tortoise care, referring to different sources, as there is a good deal of conflicting information around. Also before you buy, you should *aquire* all of the things that you will need. Have the habitat set up. It would also be a good idea to identify a vet who specializes in herps (reptiles) ahead of time.
I also live in PA, and I wanted a species that I could overwinter indoors. You will probably want to stay away from larger tortoises that need really big, year-round, outdoor enclosures. I'm a big fan of testudo tortoises, which are generally smaller in size-- Hermann's, Greek, or Russian tortoises are good considerations (stay away from the Egyptian for now, as these are tricky and not good beginner torts).
I've given you a link to the breeder where I purchased my Hermann's tortoise. They were very good, and patiently answered all of my questions about various species.
I hope this helps. Keep researching. Good luck!
Jennifer
