: My understanding is that there is only one species of Red-foot tortoise. Yet, I often see red-foots billed as "cherry heads" and "dwarf cherryheads from Brazil or Paraguay." Could someone(s) provide insight into this? What is dwarf "race" and how big do they get, as opposed to a typical foot long non-dwarf redfoot. Thanks in advance. -Larry Gaugler, NYC
By taxonomy all redfoots are the same. There is a area in Brazil and Paraguay that has a dwarf race of redfoots. I believe this is caused by a genetic mutation that is isolated to the tortoises in this area. These tortoises also tend to have a more redish head color thus the name cherryhead. These cherryheads tend to bring a premium price. As for a pet redfoot the ones that come from Surinam are the hardiest of all the redfoots and the ones I recommend. I hope this answers your question.
