My understanding is that Egyptian tortoises are very difficult to keep... not good beginner torts! And I agree with Maja-- even the most gentle dog cannot be trusted with a tortoise. Also, since you are talking about keeping a small tortoise, you would want to set up an *enclosed* yard area-- that is, with a cover over the top--so that no animal (racoon, cat, bird, etc) can get to the tortoise.
Good small tortoises for you to try would be Russian, Hermann's, or Greek tortoises.

: Just wanted to add that we live in South Carolina, and will soon have a relatively large fenced-in backyard, which would have to be shared with dog. Would an Egyptian be good?
