ALYSHA,
If you are looking for a non expensive turtle you can always try to adopt one, however you have to realize that it can include a lot of expenses. If you owe a tortoise you have to be prepared for vet visits if anything happens. ALso if you keep it inside (I am sure you know that since you have red ear sliders) you need to provide it UV bulb which is about $20 and has to be exchaned every 12 months. Also for turtles you need to buy calcium and multivitamin supplements.
PS: Russian turtles are good for a first tortoise.
: My boyfriend and I are animal lovers and already have 3 red-eared sliders, a white's tree frog, a tiger salamander, some fish, and a cat and dog. We have been looking into getting a tortoise, but don't know what kind would be practical for beginner tortoise owners. We don't have a lot of money and don't want to take on anything we can't handle. I know lots of people get animals thinking they're cute, and then abandon them when they find how hard they are to take care of. We don't mind lots of care, but we just don't have much cash.
