No turtle will be good to share a backyard with a dog. Dogs can really hurt turtles and it would be a major mistake to allow the dog and tortoise share the same fenced area. I have seen it hapen, also most adoption sites warn you about that. Even if you think you trust your dog, do not put them together.
How about trying turtle that you can keep in enclosed tank or a water turtle? You can keep a tortoise in a backyard but make sure the dog cannot reach it. Maja
: Just wanted to add that we live in South Carolina, and will soon have a relatively large fenced-in backyard, which would have to be shared with dog. Would an Egyptian be good?
