no tank is going to be OK, you can't really get
them big enough and "fish tank/reptile keeper" type glass tanks
are the worst environment for tortoises to begin
with.
Don't waste your money on another glass enclosure,
you're going to have to build or buy something
much bigger. I've heard of people using kiddie
swimming pools for a while (you must be sure there
is no draft or possibility of him falling out).
A 40 gallon breeder is easily outgrown as a tiny
hatchling, mine started in a 300 gallon by his
little self. (At first people would see him and
I guess they thought he was a "feeder turtle" for
something bigger that just had to be in there! LOLOL!)
I kept explaining it was a big house for him now,
but not for long and here a year later, it looks
like it fits him. This too is temporary, and we
have added a large addition to our new house (to
be completed in May - hurray!) specifically for
him. Then there are the outside enclosures,
walled pens and this and that. These guys aren't
easy for long! So start planning for more than
just each time they outgrow something, which is
often, what are you going to do when he's 15
pounds? 50? 85? more? You can look at Teddy's
enclosure and we put step-by-step directions on
the page called "My Cages".
