if you're talking about the optional extension
that they offer for a few dollars, yes it's
required as a regular dome (even the largest)
will not accomodate the giant bulbs the active
UV's are. That's if the dome will sit on a screen.
As you know the strip UV you used doesn't produce
much heat, so you must have had an additional
source of heat. I have a 160 watt active Uv
and a 100 watt regular bulb and a 150 watt
cermic heating element (on a thermostat).
So I've got 260 watts constantly and an addition
150 off and on heating that 8 ft. enclosure.
If your pen is open - you might could use the
275 if you could raise it up a bit, you'll have
to experiment with that, I'm thinking that's more
for use outside in the real "open" pen. If it's
got to stay 2 ft. away only, then don't get that
high of a wattage, the heats too intense coming
from one bulb and not distributed I think. Remember
they're not going to deal well with temperatures
not found in nature and may get burned before they
realize they're way too hot in one spot! I wouldn't
do it.
Again, you may be using more than one source
of heat to get cool/warm AND basking temps, so
go with the 160 you could get a spot instead of
a flood. (I sometimes use a 150 spot instead of
the 160 flood Active UV when I'm home, without
switching bulbs, just flipping light switches.)
If you're considering a cermic "wire cage" type
holder, I'd switch to a reflecting dome to direct
the light more downward with a flood, not really
required if you're using a spot.
