I've seen cooks do it, and they use a little torch thing (same one I used on baked alaskas in the desert kitchen). Very hot blue flame, quick movement over the pad, heats the pad a bit, but not much, burns off the spines fast. Another cook used the gas burner on the stove top (electric won't work, obviously), and held the pad in tongs and passed it over the high flame, very close into it.
