: I have a couple of question about keeping a Bells:
: 1) What kind of substrate is OK?
: 2)What would constitute a balanced diet? (mine refuses anything but plantains and zucchini and carrots.)
: 3)How much humidity do they need and is misting every so often OK? Also, do they need a water...um... bowl they could actually sit in in the tank?
: 4)Is it normal for them to bask 8-10 hours a day?
: 5) How often should I soak the tort?
: 6) I think this was brought up on the forum: is it normal for them to wheeze when you handle them?
: 7) Are there any signs of an unhealthy tort I should be aware of?

: Thanks you much,
: Maria (and Ziegfried)

i keep several bells, my set-up is:
-all are kept singly
-each has 10 sq. feet of floor space
-i use a 2 inch layer of repti-bark (misted twice weekly
-each is soaked in warm water once weekly for 2 minutes
-no water bowls are used
-100 watt heat lamp is on 12 hours daily, no heat at night (day temp (on the hot end)= 90 deg F. night temp is 65 deg. F)
-fedding is twice weekly, mixture of greens, grasse, fruits , vitamins, etc.
-in the summer the group is moved outside for UV
-i prepare a diet of 50 % greens (romaine lettuce, and grasses) 25 % fruit, 25% prepared dry tortiose chow, occasionally protein in the form of boiled egg, crushed crickets, crushd mealworms, and earthworms.and ofcourse vitamins once every 2 weeks.
- if your bell is wheezing take to vet immediatlly, its very hard to heal a sick tortiose, trust me!
