Carmen,
tell us which state you live in, that way we can recommend a species suitable to the climate there.

North American box turtles are hardy little creatures and captive bred are available.
Or you might be able to adopt one or two from a local rescue organization.

Or you could go for a tortoise.
Tortoises are lovely pets, mine all come running over when they see me, hoping for a tasty treat. All of mine will accept food from my fingers too.
Some species of tortoise get huge, others stay small.
Some need a humid envoronment, others an arid one.
Let us know if you're interested in a tortoise and we can go over a few of the different species.

Both box turtles and tortoises do much better when housed in an enclosure, rather than a fish tank.( Of course for Malayans who are more aquatic, a tank is fine)

If you have a yard you can house them outdoors and really enjoy much more natural behaviour. Even if you can only house them outdoors during the summer.

If you want to stick to an Asian species, Cuora flavomarginata might be a good choice.

Here's a box North American turtle web site:

http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Vines/5504/

And here's some info on C. flavomarginata, captive bred C. flavomarginata are available.

http://www.micronet.net/users/~turtles/flavomarginata.html

I don't recommend some of the other Asian species for a beginner especially C. galbinifrons.
If you do go for an Asian species remember a vet visit ASAP is a must.

Take a look at those two web sites first and at the Tortoise Trust web site linked below for info on tortoises.

Let us know which species you might be interested in.
Terry.
